In 2019 the phrase “hot girl summer” went viral on social media. I’m still not entirely sure what it means but I think it has something to do with having fun and feeling confident without looking for approval. I’m in no way opposed to that message but I can’t say I’ve ever felt the urge to tag my photos “hot girl summer”. I have, though, felt tempted to tag photos with the spoof variation - “moss girl summer” - which, from what I can gather, involves retreating to the woods, lying down and slowly being reabsorbed into the earth.

This week I’ve been amusing myself with wondering what kind of season this “girl” is having. I’ve decided I’m all about food I can eat in a bowl but “bowl girl winter” sounded too weird so I went with one of my favourite bowl foods - soup.
I love eating from bowls all year round but, in the winter, a steaming bowl of something delicious feels like essential self-care. During these cold months I can easily eat all my meals in bowls (porridge for breakfast, soup for lunch, a chilli for dinner, for example) and I feel all the more nourished because of it. It’s not just about what’s in my bowl, it’s the whole experience of eating from a bowl that makes bowl served meals so satisfying.
